isnt that like saying i dont like being a man so ill change and be a woman now.
your birth name is significant to your spirit, until you live this life and are able to signal your birth parents in conception to give you your new name, wouldnt that be like a big lie as to who you are in this day ?

Ultimately you define yourself, not your parents. Once a person finds self - gains knowledge of self, it is up to them to choose what name(s) will be beneficial. In the koran, Allah has 99 attributes/names. In the torah YHWH has 70+2 attributes/names. The underlying message , names cannot make you or tell you who you are as a whole [holy] being. They merely convey an aspect or part of you for that moment or given time or experience. The truest of names is the PERSON-ALITY. And personality is never fully encapsulated. Personality changes thru experience. Personality is INFINITE POTENTIAL. A person(nality) is forever changing and evolving, hence name changes. That is true SOVEREIGNTY over self. The power to choose and change name. Unfortunately society would not have it this way. Society wants to define and bound you in A singular name. Society prevents the person from availing true sovereignty, which is to say the natural right to change at will. Society says we are this way or that way. Or we should be this way or that way or we are born this way or that way. Society says FATE IS IN COMMAND OF US. People must carry id cards when in fact that very person, his/her persons is the ultimate id. We must rely on second - third source verification. Actually you the first person source are the ultimate validation of who you say you are. The world is not ready for this level. We can look to the story of Adam, Eve and N'ksh [serpent]. He introduced this knowledge to Adam and Eve (the power of self determination without restraint). But they werent ready. They were still being named by their parents (G-d)

There is a self help writer, counsler name Louis L Hay who wrote a book called You Can Heal Yourself. About affirmations ect. She believes that you choose your parents. "Each of us decides to incarnate upon this planet at a particular point in time and space. We have chosen to come here to learn a particular lesson that will advance us upon our spiritual, evolutionary pathway. We choose our sex, our color, our country and then we look around for a particular set of parents who will mirror the pattern we are bringing in to work on in this lifetime. Then, when we grow up we usually point our fingers accusingly at our parents and whimper, "You did it to me." But really we choose them because they were perfect for what we wanted to work on overcoming."I can't say I agree cause I don't give man that much credit but it makes sense especially the last thought. As far as changing your name I agree with both Chak & Kah. There is a certain spiritual connection between the name chosen for you at birth, I have changed my name (not legally) when I was not ready. I also believe you may evolve and then change your name like Abram and Isaac (may be poor examples since God or and Angel changed there names right?) I will never change my name again. I have different attributes that I don't mind carrying I've been called Siddiq because I was trustworthy and friendly, Shekinah well I really don't know exactly why and I chose Anav because it meant humble and I have been humbled by some recent events in my life. I know that Kabalists and Numerologist have philosophies on the name and changing it. www.kabalarians.com/cfm/your.cfmwww.tarot.com/about-numerology/faqs/name-changes

I must say that it does make sense that we are the one who choose our parents, from the different things that I'm reading. It is important that as parents we have some knowledge on how a name affects us, and should consider the value of the name. I also agree with the points that both Chakatak and Kah made.

when my parents chose my name they werent thinking about the significance or characteristics or attributes they wanted to invest in me. Man! them bamas named me after their favorite cuban singer! Dario Moreno! LOL!!!!!! What saved my asp is my name is actually an arch typal found in the bible [Darius the great persian conquerer] so it has significance. Even down to my last name which I inherited from my pops bloodline has major importance and meaning in the bible.
Far too many parents , especially black parents do not consider meanings behind names.

My mom gots the same name as you. Well actually hers is the french version - reneé (her full name is Anne Marie Reneé). It comes from the word Renai'ssance [rebirth of christendom]. Renaissance is broken down as such : Re [to bring back] + naissance [nativity] = born again or rebirth. Reneé is a contracted form for Renaissance. Also the word reign [rule] has akinship. They all intertwine, coming from a language period when religiosity prevailed, upholding the monarchy. My last name is Emmanuel, the same as Jesus' name. Woohoooooo!!!!. That may explain my passion and at times obsession with the bible!. LOL don't feel bad my mama named me after a character on Start Trek (Treky). A Queen named Rayna, which means ruler in Scandanavian, Queen in spanish and even something in Hebrew. So I feel you

I always hated my legal name because I got teased about it. I didnt hate it because it wasnt African. It had nothin' to do with having a 'slave name'. Kids would laugh at me and say "thats a girls name". I was named after my moms father. The ironic thing is that Sandy wasnt even his name. It was a nickmame given to him because of his hair and complexion. It was meant at the time to be an insult but ended up becoming his nickname. He was fair-skinned with long red hair. He looked like a high yella red-headed lil' gurl I heard when he was young. Why my mom named me this Ill never know or why my dad went along with it. When I enlisted in the Navy I legally changed my name and switched my middle name Edward to be first. I felt a lot better after that.
When I became a Muslim I was told to do away with my slave name and pick an Arabic name that fit my personality or at least something I wanted to strive to be. So for a time my name was Talib Sadiyq. Talib means seeker or student. I was always studying and asking questions. Sadiyq because people trust me and ask me advice sumtimez. I later chose Gamaliel because in the mid-90's I was really heavy into the Old Testament, Hebrew customs, language, etc. So folks where calling me rabbi, so I looked up a Hebrew name I thought suited me. It was also the name of this famous Jewish scholar in the 1st centory A.D. who in THE BOOK OF ACTS was Paul's mentor. It means "reward of God." My Native American name is Walking Tall Bear and my AEO name is Djed Phut Sabur Khopsh. I gotta a lot names I know. I personally go by Gamaliel online, everywhere else plain old Edward.

i never understood that term slave name? any name can be enslavement if you choose it to be that way, but if you choose to find the empowerment of any verbal linkage you wont feel threatened by a name given you. i have never changed my name when people ask me whats your nick name my first name is condenced NETS simple as that. although i did look up the name nets in the bible and it wasnt a good con-note-ation for the name...sad to say. I always hated my legal name because I got teased about it. I didnt hate it because it wasnt African. It had nothin' to do with having a 'slave name'. Good Topic Linette. It's good to see people using their real names for a change. I remember back in the beginning when the net became popular Illuminopolites were afraid to use their real names, use credit cards online, give out numbers and addresses. Afraid that Big Brother would hunt them down. We have relaxed a lot. It's good to see I guess. Does the Matrix have you? Any way. I NEVER had another name or used another name other than Wondell, I phonetically spell is as 1dell as many of you are moor than aware of. My mother named me after a guitarist whose name was Wendell but she thought his name was Wondell. I am happy with it. I thought I was the only one in the world with it until I reached my mid 20s and heard that it was the name of an entire family in england going by the name of Wandale. I learned this at Bush Gardens in Virginia where you can look up your"slave" name. Now that term slave name doesn't apply to your FIRST name. The term Slave Name applies to your LAST NAME. Because many of us were named after our slave masters In all other parts of the world your LAST name is either your fathers First name or Last name and passed on to you and your mother. So for the slave masters to put their names as our last name means that they were calling themselves our fathers. Now THAT name (mine being Wallace) I don't have a problem changing for that reason, but then again it would be mute because Wallace has become of family not even associated with his slavery roots. We have redefined ourselves and give absolutely no homage or credence to the founders of the name. Ignorance can sometimes be bliss. That is so true black mothers go for sound rather than meaning. Right now at work I a sitting next to a Laquana. Da fuck is that??? Laquana? Sounds like a species of Iquana or some ish!!! and 2 cubicals down is a Shaquita and across the aisle is a Shaquanisha. As you can see they ALL share similar sounds the Ah sound the Uh sound and the Quah sound. That is a VERY popular name from the african american tongue. Even my name Wahn dell. Dell and Ah were very popular in the 70s. I had a jamaican friend in high school named Rune Robb. His misspronounced my name and would call me OneDell in stead of Wahndell. I LOVED IT and never went back. Because usually when people would ask me my name and I would say Wondell (Wahn Dale) They would IMMEDITALY misprounce it like I said it wrong or something. They be like "Wendell???" "Whydell? " "Wordell? " I be like DAYUMM!!!! Da fuck wrong with your ears (I never said that out loud) But when I started telling people 1dell and holding up one finger like a number 1 it drastically cut down on them mispronouncing my name. But I will NEVER use another name. I remember this one time I did when I moved back to maryland from California after I got out of the Military. I got on this telephone dating line and I didn't want no one from highschool recognizing me. Just in case they were using the system. So I went by my middle name Stephaine. NO!! It's NOT stephanie! It's pronounced Ste' Fawn. I cringe at that name! I HATE IT!!! Women were calling the house saying "Can I speak to Ste Fawn please". My mom was like "WHO? oohh" lolol. I tried to pay attention to how being called Stephaine changed me. I didn't like it at all because I don't like that Aw sound. I love the Eh sound. My son's name is Z'mir. Means to Laudate, to Sing, to proclaim even. To master the vibration of sound for pleasureable mood altering. And BOY does that boy sing!!! He is like 2 mos old and trying to talk. I don't mind letting him cry to skrenphen his voice. Anyway, I brang that up because his mother originally named him, but she wanted to call him Zamir. And after looking at the name in hebrew there is no letter A between the Z and the M so I felt that it should get the phantom letter Eh like a short e or an eastern E that sounds moor like a long A. Zaymir. I am leaving behind the generations of the Aw and Ah and kwa. Heading BACK to the holy sound of Eh. My children's names N'vi (Nevi or Neyvi) Sh'ina (Sheh 'Ina) Zion and Ari'es. the 4th generation will not have to know the horrors of being identified with those experimental sounds. Should allow to vibrate freely
