This is for my sistah Sh'Kinah, and of course any other new mothers out there. Daily Log This log is meant to help you keep track of how often the baby is nursing and how many wet and soiled diapers there are each day. This is a good way for you to know that he is getting enough breastmilk, because what goes in...comes out. You can probably switch to the yellow soiled diapers part because your baby should be all past that tarry stuff Remember, breastfed babies stools may have a "seedy" look to it. Watch the foods you eat! Brocoli will make for a very gassy baby! Also, you inquired earlier about help with making more milk. Well, it's a supply and demand thing. If you have to use bottles, that's fine--but try to pump and use that milk. You can borrow a nice breast pump from your local WIC office. Their kinda fun, and if you really use it you will be making soooo much milk!!! You can freeze breastmilk, but only thaw it by putting that bag/bottle in a glass of hot water--then make sure you shake it. Never microwave anything you give your baby--microwaves create hot spots..and those few drops that feel cool may be followed by scalding milk! Drink lots of fluids also! Drink as much water as you can stand. Get you a gallon container and set a goal for yourself to drink as much of it in a day that you can. If you are even slightly dehydrated, your milk supply will decrease dramatically. Your body tries to take care of you. DIRECTIONS: Circle the hour when your baby nurses (Goal: 8-12 times in a 24 hour period) Circle the W when your baby has a wet diaper Circle the S when your baby has a soiled diaper During the first week, you will use more diapers each day. Among the many hormones released during nursing is CCK, or cholecystokinin (colie-sessto-kynin) This hormone is released by your GI tract in response to eating - it causes that post-Thanksgiving-dinner sleepiness we've all experienced. It is also released in response to your baby suckling at your breasts. CCK, along with two other nursing hormones, prolactin and oxytocin, tell your body to rest while you are nursing. In short, you are supposed to feel sleepy when you are breastfeeding! However, you will find that this intense sleepiness lessens as your baby gets older, and breastfeeding will make you feel relaxed rather than sleepy.

I have a little log like this it came with a breast feeding info guide. I was just saying how I needed to keep track of the feeding because my son is greedy!! Ok now this is the confusing part. My breast feeding is like a snack. My son completely quit on me for a week and I did not frequently pump and that decreased my milk. I tried everyday and he'd scream over my nipple (we had jokes that when he woke from a nightmare it was about me forcing a nipple on him) lol. Just this week he gave me another chance but its not flowing like before so after about 5 minutes he gets frustrated and starts to cry. When I was pumping I never got more than 2 ounces out of both breasts in one session. That was with a hand pump. Now I have an electric pump and I get less. His diapers have always had a seedy yellow soil because even if its 2oz of my milk he gets some everyday. That week when he gave up on me it was a bit more pasty. I don't want to starve him. I'm going to continue to give him what he'll take then give him formula. I will drink more and eat more and pump more. I figure if he latches on 4-5 times for 10 minutes each time I probably need to pump 8 times for 15 minutes each. What do you think He just had a feeding for about 10 minutes and fell out, good sign because usually he gives up and screams till he gets a bottle.

The first few minutes of nursing is "hard" on a baby--they have to really suck to get it out...but after about 3 or 4 minutes that stuff will literally run out. If pumping isn't working for you, try expressing your milk--you can even have daddy stimulate them with his hand. As weird as it sounds, it triggers the hormones you need. Try this--get a towel, and get it as hot as you can stand it--lay it over your breasts for a few minutes and then try to express your milk with your hands. Do this anytime you can between feedings--and feed on demand, not on a schedule. Also, don't wait until he cries to feed him--as soon as he awakes and begins to stir around, change his diaper so he is fresh and comfy, then attempt nursing. Don't use any pacifiers either, until you are SUPER NURSER! You're gonna flip when I tell you this---I pumped my breast in between nursing--using an electric breastpump--damn, I was putting out over 20oz per breast! I had these sumo wrestler looking babies that would get all excited every time I picked them up. You're baby isn't gonna starve--you'll see early signs of dehydration before that. Keep on nursing, and keep the bottles out of his mouth-NO MATTER WHAT. When my first son was a baby--my mom wanted to be such a part--we were staying with her, and every time I turned my back she was popping a bottle in his mouth! She's the one who bought the bottle and formula. We literally argued about it, and that was the whole reason why I said, "damn the help, I'm leaving". We moved and it was a struggle to get my son to latch on. He would even arch his back and scream at my breast. I just stayed calm, sipped some tea, pampered and soothed him--he'd fall asleep--yes, hungry--and we'd try it again when he awoke. He finally latched on so strong! I was so happy I nearly cried That's when I learned how much milk I was making--he was hospitalized for a surgery. While in intensive care I pumped and took it into the intensive care unit. I remember walking in with all these bottles and a nurse said "that's breastmilk?" I said yeah. And she gave me this big corny high five and told all the other mom's and nurses and called me Super Nurser ( ) I didn't think it was a big deal til this other mom walked in with a 4 oz bottle 1/3 full. She complained that the pump didn't feel right--but she'd only been in there about 5 minutes. It's work! Pretty soon you're gonna have so much milk, he's gonna fall asleep at your breast and when he does he'll be locked on, and you'll have to break the suction and you'll see all this milk just run out of you! I would have to press a pillow hard against my breast to get them to stop! You'll get so used to it, you'll be able to do it walking around! I could walk around a store while nursing. I would lay down and sleep while they nursed..when they got a little older they'd help themselves at night! My 9 month older daughter would wake up tugging at my shirt--I'd lift up my shirt and she'd grab 'em like it was a bottle!

Try to nurse him before he shows signs of hunger such as sucking his hands, and crying. As SOON as he awakes, start nursing. A breastfed baby, early on, can nurse as often as every hour! It's work!

A breastfed baby, early on, can nurse as often as every hour! It's work! Yeah he spends most of his time awake nursing. I think he gets tired because he's used to the bottle after a while he just flips on me. But he does latch on. Hopefully the stimulation will make me produce on demand.

if you drink a beer a day it can help produce more milk and heartier milk for your infant. Yeah he spends most of his time awake nursing. if you drink a beer a day it can help produce more milk and heartier milk for your infant. Only if it is high in brewers yeast. Modern domestic brewing processes seldom use brewers yeast. Maybe a imported nonalcohalic beer would suffice. I will look into it. Have you ever heard of the herb fenugreek

I reIlluminopolite my grandmaother giving me Guiness Stout to drink when I had my first child. It is very nourishing. We even used to mix it with milk and an egg with nutmeg, vanilla some cinnamon if you like & some sugar. Protein drinks are also good. It could be made from peanut butter or sesame tahini blended with soy milk & spices. Almonds are also good for milk. Likewise hot teas like blessed tissels, or mothers' worth, just before you nurse are beneficial. You should also continue to drink red rasberry teas, which is very good during pregnancy esepcially towards the end. Barley soup is also a good way to nourish your body & good for milk production.

Thanks Sis, Guiness huh I bet it is filled with Brewers Yeast and all kinds of roots an culture lol. I believe there is a tea mothers milk with the herb fenugreek in it. I know i see it in the healthfood stores. i forgot all about rasberry, so good for the uterus (gives me heartburn). I been reading today, someone said have high protein & carb snacks. If you have a recipe for that soy drink with the peanut butter I'd love it. I never had the tahini before it sounds interesting. I also read to go to sleep (which I should be doing now) and water!!!

I agree Guiness is kinda of bitter to the taste. Mixing it with milk & sugar & spices does the 'trick'! The mother's milk with the fenugreek is good also. I usually just add my ingredients, I never measure, but you could try putting several tablespoon of the tahini, or peanut butter, add your soy milk, sugar and your spices if you like. I like a rich drink, so you can modify to your tastes as you experiment with the richesness that you prefer. Tahini I must say is an acquired taste. Not quite like peanut butter, but the taste is not bad really. Also, green leafy vegetables and green salads are good source for your protein. Munching on seeds are excellent. Sesame seeds mixed with sunflower seeds are good. Do you like granola? We used to make it by adding peanut butter, some syrup, sugar (you could eliminate this) even adding some butter to make a thick sauce in a sauce pan or cast iron frying pan. To this add your whole oats, your seeds (sesame & sunflower) and other nuts if you prefer. Mix while cooking on the stove top until all is well blended and it beggins to get a little crunchy. You can also at this point add it to the oven to finish it up, depending on how dry you want it, being careful not to burn it. This could be eaten as is or with milk or apple sauce. Good for breakfast of snacks. You could add raisins and or dates also. Water is a must. Girl get all the sleep you can!

Question calling all old schoolers. My baby is colicy, I still am not producing his entire food intake. I'd say I'm the supplement. My mom complained as well as his dad about the infant formulas being so chemical. My mom use to use carnation & pet milk and put vitamin drops. Any other ideas that sounds just as bad as the formula. I found this site and would like to here is anyone is familiar with any of these recipes. www.naturodoc.com/library/children/formula.htm
