I remember when the JWs would come by my house. I'd let them in and sup with them. I would learn their doctrine just to get the chance to innerstand them. I always admired JWs because they were out there doing the dayum thang. Instead of the cowardly churched christian that does nothing but go to church on sunday.
I could innerstand how they came to interpret much of what they interpreted. The tenants of their doctrines such as not celebrating the holidays, yada yada. But I didn't innerstand about the Birthdays and disallowance of sports.
I was told that they were not allowed to participate in sports because it was against scripture to compete against another. I long since forgotten the scripture that they used to say was proof that God didn't want us to compete. But it didn't make sense to me after they showed it to me.
Anyway. Here is a silent debate against that principle. I will use scriptures from 2 of the wisest brothers from each testament. Shlomo/Solomon and Rabbi Shaul/Paul
The sport I will be using will be That of Racing, whether by Chariot or by foot, this is OBVIOUSLY a sport that the hebrews were familiar with and they never speak negatively of it. In fact they use it as a metaphore for teaching wholesome principles. I will also include some words from the Psalms to make my point:
Psa 19:5 Which [is] as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, [and] rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
Ecc 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race [is] not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
1Cr 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
Hbr 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Not to mention that IHaWAH competed with Shatan over the devotion of Yob/Job. Not only that, D'wed/David entered a contest to win a prize, the standoff with Goliath was nothing moor than a competition.
So here is a doctrine that is not founded nor supported in scripture. It's one that the JWs should do away with.
