Nuwaubians appear to have vacated compound

EATONTON, Ga. — Members of the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors have apparently vacated land owned by the group in rural Putnam County and in Athens.

This comes after a federal judge ordered the land, which includes a 476-acre Putnam County compound and a $750,000 home in Athens, be turned over to the government.

At its peak, as many as 500 people lived at the compound in 1999, said Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills. But recently, fewer than 50 had been living there.

And by Friday, no members of the Nuwaubian group could be seen at its headquarters near Shady Dale. Left behind were a collection of monuments, faux pyramids, totem poles and some cats and fish.

Officers from the Putnam County Animal Control office were at the property rescuing the cats. Workers also were draining a decorative pond and collecting the fish. A barricade prevents vehicles from entering.

The religious sect's leader, Malachi York, was sentenced to 135 years in prison in April for child molestation and racketeering. Prosecutors said he recruited older girls to groom younger girls for sex with him and used the sect for his financial gain.

"The whole place, like York himself, was nothing but a facade," Sills said. "You can see that now. They sort of destroyed some things. It's a surreal environment with junk, clothes scattered around and statues about to fall down."

After York's sentencing, a dispute arose over whether he owned the compound and the home in Athens. But both are now in the hands of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Putnam County property has been assessed at nearly $1 million, Sills said.

U.S. District Judge Ashley Royal will decide this Friday whether to order a new trial for York, Sills said. An attorney from New York, Jonathan Marks, now is listed as York's attorney. Sills said York has had 13 different attorneys since his arrest nearly two years ago.

Sills is full of it! Everytime I had went to the land, it was always well maintained, although the bathrooms could have used some work but other than that, i personally never saw any statues "about to fall down".
I hate that this mess happend. The land was beautiful and a lot of hard work and effort was put into making it a beautiful place. I loved going down there, it was always peaceful.

Yes Sills is full of it with his racist ass..
And if anything was destroyed it was so others won't take it or deface it.. I don't blame them one bit IF they did. And the document states that they "SORT of destroyed some stuff" I'm sure they can't wait to get in there to bulldoze and everything..

M9 is the most informative on this. So his word should be the final say so. But from what I know I think what happened is the people on the land did not want to give the feds the pleasure of destroying anything they left behind. Instead they were going to destroy anything remaining they couldnt move themself and leave the land just as they found it before moving - EMPTY. I guess they didnt get a chance to see that thru with the amount of time given to vacate.

I might be wrong on all this so hopefully M9 can clear this up for us.

If I was passihng judgement on the land then you would both have a valid point but I am not. MY POINT is about nuwuabians trying to judge sills when that aint even the issue. We have damages lives to deal from a man who confessed to committing the said crimes against him and all we can seem to think about is whether a man is a racist or not. That aint the issue!!! That is very true when you are living in the middle east somewhere but when you live here you have to obey the laws of the land HERE, I don't care how sovereign you claim to be.

Besidses, what do you need to be doing deflowering little girls when you have dozens of wives already? Somebodies priorites were screwed up!
