Violence, mayhem, and sex are thrown at us in volume, but I wasn't able to enjoy it, not even on a "popcorn" level, because I felt it was all a bit too convenient, too orchestrated, too stagey. It's not enough, for example, that there's a foot chase at one point... it has to follow the characters down the face of a rocky cliff. A bus chase isn't enough... it has to fly. A sixty-second cracking test with a gun to Stanley's head isn't enough, he's got to be getting a blow job as well. It's all excess, and it only attracts attention to the otherwise slow pace and slim logic of Gabriel's plan (or even slimmer, the logic of the various cracking schemes). |
